Hi there,
I hope you are doing well.
I finished this painting and I wanted to share with you the result and some thoughts.
This painting reflects an immense act of love between the main subjects of the painting and the observer that painted them: myself, the painter and the mother. The acts of daily life are powerful and beautiful, full of knowledge and consciousness.
I’ve been working on this painting during the winter. I started with acrylics, no underdrawing and no value underpainting. Painting this big and this way was so liberating. I think it was the first time when my sketchbook practice started to reflects on the canvas, on larger pieces.
This way of painting is a response of a need of spontaneity, to capture the precious moments that I live. To not come back again and again on making unnecessary brush strokes. Making clever decisions and clear the mind.
In this short video you can see the painting at the previous stage of being finished. So you can appreciate the size.
When I started the first layer of oil painting, I was regretting not finishing it entirely in acrylics, going all in with acrylics. Partially because I love Alla prima paintings and solve them in one session. It is all about moment and the way I approach painting and not that much about the material itself. I am working right now in the largest piece I ever worked and I started it with oils, on top of a very quick acrylics raw umber underpainting. Using acrylics and oils the way I enjoy the most: In an Alla prima essence but in different sessions due to the size.
Some weeks after finishing ‘La hora de la siesta’, I was doing this precious painting ‘Después de la cena’ entirely in acrylics. This means using acrylics as a main material and not as a transitional, short of, material. Acrylics ready to go. A medium on its own.
There is something about acrylics that suits perfectly my desire of getting things done. I mean, getting paintings out of my head. This medium dries fast and I enjoy the not so heavy body part (I am using Amsterdam acrylics) I barely thin the painting with water and I usually paint very fast. Acrylics is also my favorite medium to work with on my sketchbook.
I started painting in acrylics I think some 2-3 years ago. Being oil painting the medium which I learned how to paint when I was a kid.
There is two videos in my youtube channel about the painting ‘La hora de la siesta’ that you can watch if you want to see some process. I post in a regular basis on youtube so if you enjoy the videos, please subscribe :)
